We often use the past continuous and the past simple together. 
Ми часто використовуємо минулий тривалий час (Past Continuous) та минулий простий час (Past Simple) разом.

a The past continuous talks about a past action in progress. 
Минулий тривалий час (Past Continuous) говорить про дію в минулому, що триває.

b The past simple talks about a completed shorter action that interrupted the action in progress.
Минулий простий час (Past Simple) говорить про завершену коротшу дію, яка перервала дію, що триває.

c If one action happens after the other, we use the past simple for both actions.
Якщо одна дія відбувається після іншої, ми використовуємо минулий простий час для обох дій.
