On a cold January morning, Flight 1549 ¹ was taking off (take off) from a New York airport when it ² hit (hit) some birds. The engines ³ stopped (stop) almost immediately. Captain Sullenberger quickly realised that the plane ⁴ (was) falling (fall) very fast. There was only one place he could land the plane: on the Hudson River in the middle of New York!

Steven Day is a photographer. That morning he ⁵ was working (work) on his computer when someone passed his desk. 'What's that?' they asked, pointing to something on the river. Steven ⁶ found (find) his camera. At first, he didn't know what he ⁷ was taking (take) pictures of. 'It ⁸ was moving (move) down the river, like a boat,' he said. When he looked closely, he ⁹ saw (see) it was a plane. People ¹⁰ were standing (stand) on its wings in the middle of the river!

The next day Steven's photograph ¹¹ appeared (appear) in newspapers and on websites all over the world.

Холодного січневого ранку рейс 1549 злітав з аеропорту Нью-Йорка, коли врізався в птахів. Двигуни зупинилися майже одразу. Капітан Салленбергер швидко зрозумів, що літак дуже швидко падає. Було лише одне місце, де він міг посадити літак – на річку Гудзон посеред Нью-Йорка!

Стівен Дей – фотограф. Того ранку він працював за комп’ютером, коли хтось пройшов повз його стіл.
– Що це таке? – запитали вони, вказуючи на щось у річці.
Стівен узяв свій фотоапарат. Спочатку він не знав, що саме фотографує.
– Воно рухалося вниз по річці, як човен, – сказав він.
Коли він придивився уважніше, то побачив, що це був літак. Люди стояли на його крилах посеред річки!

Наступного дня фотографія Стівена з’явилася в газетах і на вебсайтах по всьому світу.
